Sensory Processing Differences in Children – Common Signs and How Occupational Therapy Can Help

July 29, 2026

Every child experiences the world differently. Some love getting messy, loud play and big hugs, while others prefer quieter environments, avoid certain textures or become overwhelmed by busy spaces. These preferences are a normal part of development, but for some children, sensory experiences can have a much bigger impact on

Why Neurodiversity-Affirming Practice Matters

March 12, 2026

Every child experiences the world differently. Neurodivergent children think in unique ways, communicate in their own style, and navigate sensory and social environments differently than their peers. Neurodiversity-affirming practice focuses on recognising, respecting, and supporting these differences rather than trying to “fix” them. For parents, understanding this approach can transform

How Psychologists, Occupational Therapists, and Speech Pathologists Work Together to Support Neurodiverse Children

March 5, 2026

When it comes to supporting children, there is no “one size fits all” approach. Every child experiences the world differently and has their own ways of thinking, communicating, and engaging with people and their environment. Each allied health discipline brings its own perspective, focus areas, and techniques to help children

Supporting your toddlers growing vocabulary and language development

March 5, 2026

Watching your child learn to communicate can be one of the most exciting parts of early development. From first sounds to using first words, every small step displays their growing curiosity and engagement in the world around them. While all children learn and grow at their own speed, the everyday

Book Week at Scribble, and the team committed. Three crayons, the Very Hungry Caterpillar, Bananas in Pyjamas, a trip to Oz, and more red and white stripes than one waiting room needs.

The corridor got the same treatment. Every Scribble on the wall came dressed as someone from a book, and there is a wall of baby photos so children can work out which one is their therapist.

There is a reason we do this. A child who walks in and finds their therapist dressed as a crayon is a child who is already halfway to having a go. Play is not the warm up to the session. It is the session.

Thanks to every family who read along with us this year.

Speech Pathology Week finishes today. Across the week we have looked at connecting, learning, growing, belonging, choosing and participating, and all of it points the same way. Communication is not only about speaking clearly. It is about a child having a way to be understood that works for them, and the room to use it. Thank you to every family who has trusted us with that this year.

Participation is what communication is for. Taking a turn in a game, asking to join in at the park, telling a teacher that you did not follow the instruction. When communication is supported, a child can spend less energy on being understood and more on simply being there. That is the possibility this week is about.

Choice is one of the most underrated parts of communication. Picking the red cup, deciding which book comes next, saying no to a game that feels too loud. For a child who is still finding their words, being offered a real choice and being given the time to answer can change how a whole day goes. Speech, signs, pictures and communication devices all count.

It is Book Week, and this year`s theme is Symphony of Stories. Reading together does more than build vocabulary. It gives children a way to talk about feelings that are hard to name, a reason to ask questions, and a shared moment that is not about getting anything right. You do not need to finish the book. You do not even need to read the words on the page.

Growth in communication is easy to miss while you are living it. It can look like a child who now waits a beat before answering, or who tries a longer sentence and gets halfway through it. Progress is often quiet and uneven, and a week where nothing seems to shift is not a week wasted. If you are not sure what to look for, ask us what we are watching for.

It is Speech Pathology Week. A speech pathologist does far more than fix sounds. Across a week our team might work on building sentences, reading body language, understanding what has been asked, using a communication device, or finding the words for a big feeling. Communication is not only talking, and it is not only about being understood by adults.

Speech Pathology Week starts today, and this year the theme is communication creates possibility. The first possibility is connection. Before a child has words there is pointing, reaching, and looking across the room to check that you are still there. Those moments are communication too, and they are worth noticing. Each day this week we are looking at one thing communication makes possible.

If you have NDIS funding, the way your plan is managed decides which providers you can see. We can support self managed and plan managed participants. If your plan is agency managed, which means the NDIA pays providers directly, you will need to look elsewhere, and we would rather tell you that up front than waste your time. Not sure which one you have? Your plan will say, and we are happy to check it with you.

"I can`t" often means "this feels too big right now" rather than "I am unable". It can help to shrink the task instead of talking them out of the feeling. Do the first step together, name what is hard, then let them finish the last part on their own so the win is still theirs.
