    Why Neurodiversity-Affirming Practice Matters

    March 12, 2026

Every child experiences the world differently. Neurodivergent children think in unique ways, communicate in their own style, and navigate sensory and social environments differently than their peers. Neurodiversity-affirming practice focuses on recognising, respecting, and supporting these differences rather than trying to “fix” them. For parents, understanding this approach can transform

"Does my child qualify for NDIS?" It`s one of the most common questions we hear.

The short answer: if your child has a permanent or significant disability or developmental delay that affects their daily life, they may be eligible.

The longer answer: navigating the NDIS can feel like a lot. That`s why we walk families through the process from the very first conversation, not just once you`re already funded.

We`re registered NDIS providers across Moonee Ponds, Caroline Springs, Craigieburn, and Werribee.

It might not be a tantrum. It might be an overload.

When a child`s nervous system gets more input than it can handle, their behaviour is telling you something. Not causing problems. Communicating them.

Understanding that difference doesn`t just change how you respond in the moment. It changes the whole relationship.

Our OTs and psychologists work with children and families to understand what`s driving the behaviour, and build strategies that actually help.

School holidays + kids at home = "what do we do now?"

Here are 5 simple sensory play ideas you can try at home with things you probably already have:

    1. Water play — cups, funnels, sponges in the sink or a tub outside. Add food colouring for extra engagement.

    2. Playdough station — homemade or store-bought. Add buttons, pasta, or cookie cutters for fine motor work.

    3. Obstacle course — couch cushions, pillows, a blanket tunnel. Great for body awareness and coordination.

    4. Messy art — finger painting, shaving cream on a tray, or cornflour slime. Embrace the mess.

    5. Calm box — a container with fidget toys, stress balls, putty, and a timer. A go-to for when things get overwhelming.

Sensory play isn`t just fun. It supports attention, regulation, motor skills, and problem-solving.

Want to add some purposeful play into the holidays? We still have spots in our Sensory Science Groups across our clinics next week:

    Moonee Ponds

Lava Lamp Making — Tue 14 April, 9:15am

    Craigieburn

Sensory Box Making — Tue 14 April, 11:00am

    Caroline Springs

Lava Lamp Making — Wed 15 April, 1:00pm

Run by our speech pathologists and OTs in small groups of 4-5. One hour, hands-on, and designed around real therapy goals.

This is our sensory room. And yes, it`s as cool as it looks.

A darkened space with a star projector, climbing wall, and carefully chosen sensory equipment. It`s designed to help children explore movement, balance, and body awareness in a calm, controlled environment.

Our therapists use this space for children who:

    - Need help with sensory processing

    - Are working on coordination and motor planning

    - Benefit from a quieter, less stimulating environment

    - Are learning to self-regulate

Every element is intentional. The lighting, the textures, the equipment. It`s therapy, disguised as the best room in the building.

School holidays are here, and routines go out the window. That`s completely normal.

But for some children, a sudden shift in structure can bring big emotions, restlessness, or difficulty settling.

You don`t need a rigid schedule. Even small anchors can help:

    - A consistent wake-up and bedtime

    - One predictable activity each day (a walk, a craft, a meal together)

    - Visual cues like a simple picture chart for younger children

Structure isn`t about control. It`s about giving children a sense of what`s coming next, which helps them feel safe and regulated.

If your child finds transitions tricky or struggles with changes to routine, our OT team can help with practical strategies that work at home.

Want to add some purposeful play into the holidays? We still have spots in our Sensory Science Groups across our clinics:

    Moonee Ponds

Sensory Box Making — Thu 9 April, 2:00pm

Lava Lamp Making — Tue 14 April, 9:15am

    Craigieburn

Sensory Box Making — Tue 14 April, 11:00am

    Caroline Springs

Lava Lamp Making — Wed 15 April, 1:00pm

Run by our speech pathologists and OTs in small groups of 4-5. One hour, hands-on, and designed around real therapy goals.
